What is the difference between a digital piano and a portable keyboard?

The difference between keyboards and pianos can change depending on the use of the words. Historically a keyboard was any instrument operated by pressing keys. This includes clavichords, harpsichords and pianos. In current usage, however, it is applied to electronic keyboards.

For us, the difference between a digital piano and an electronic keyboard is the purpose of the instrument. A digital piano is intended to sound and feel as similar to an acoustic piano as possible, whereas a keyboard can be used for a variety of purposes. A higher spec keyboard can sometimes mimic and build on the attributes of an acoustic piano, but others can be used as an arranger, a MIDI controller or a workstation. The possibilities are endless!/p>

Can you learn piano on a mini keyboard?

While mini keyboards are great for learning the basics, such as beginner chords and how to read music, you won't necessarily have the key action required to gain technique. As your playing progresses, you would also need a larger instrument so as to have access to all notes needed. Some keyboards don't have pedal inputs. Mini keyboards are brilliant for igniting a passion for music and for familiarising oneself with the fundamentals of piano playing.

What kind of keyboard is best for beginners?

The best keyboard for beginners depends on what you're wanting to use it for.

• MIDI keyboards are designed for sequencing notes and playing virtual instruments on software on your computer.
• An arranger is perfect for performing, and can play multiple instrument sounds and accompaniments.
• Synthesizers, or synths, produce manipulated sounds and can be used for live performance or recording.
• A workstation is a synth with additional features such as MIDI controllers and DAWS. There are also organs, which replicate the sound of church organs, and kids keyboards which are perfect for younger players.

A MIDI keyboard's a great place to start if you're looking at production whereas a kids keyboard is perfect for a child starting their musical journey. Synths are a good all-round starting point.
